Abstract (EN)
This study examines the linguistic changes in the Turkish translations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1808 work Faust from a diachronic perspective. The study analyzed translations ranging from the first translation by Galip Bahtiyar in 1926, in Ottoman Turkish, to those by Sadi Irmak in 1960, Hasan İzzettin Dinamo in 1983, and İclal Cankorel in 2011. The findings illustrate, with examples, how linguistic change developed at phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and semantic levels and in which areas the change was most prominent. The results of the study indicate that the most significant linguistic change occurred in the lexical domain, with the replacement of Arabic and Persian loanwords by Turkish equivalents. This process reflects the influence of the Turkish Language Reform. After lexical changes, phonological and syntactic changes are most noticeable, while morphological and semantic changes were less frequently observed.
