Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effect of using movies in teaching Turkish to foreigners on foreign students' speaking skills was examined. Mixed method was used in the research. Pre-test and post-test were conducted for quantitative data, and focus group interview was used for qualitative data. The research was conducted online with 20 B2 level students learning Turkish at Gazi TÖMER. First of all, speaking questions prepared by taking expert opinion were asked to ten students in the experimental group and the control group. The answers to these questions were evaluated according to the speaking scale developed by Sallabaş (2011). After the pre-test, speaking lessons were taught with movies and film activities in the experimental group, and in the traditional way for 5 days in the control group. After the application was completed, a post-test was administered to both groups to see the effect of the films on the speaking skills of foreign students. The difference between the pre-test and post-test results of the experimental and control groups was tested with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 program. In the findings, it was understood that the results of the experimental group were higher than the control group, but there was no statistically significant difference. In addition, focus group discussion were held with the students in the experimental group and their opinions were taken about the film application. These views were interpreted by content analysis. At the end of the study, various suggestions were presented in order to contribute to the development of the students' speaking skills and to other studies in the field.
