Academic vocabulary of students who learn Turkish as a foreign language and vocabulary in academic Turkish textbooks

Within the context of this research, it is aimed to determine the vocabulary in the academic Turkish textbooks which are prepared for the foreign students and to determine the foreing students' vocabulary in written expression in the academic Turkish classes. In accordance of this purpose, nine academic Turkish textbooks which are prepared for the students who learn Turkish as a foreign languge in Turkey have been analysed and the books are evaluated in three basic themes which are social studies, sciences and health sciences. On the purpose of determining students' vocabulary elements in written expression, 125 Students who attending academic Turkish classes in TOMER Sakarya University have been selected as study population. This study has been carried out in the model of survey which is one of the qualitative research designs. Students' written expresions have been collected by using semi-structured interview forms which are made by the researchers. These forms have been consisted of open-ended questions in the themes of social studies, sciences and health sciences. In the second stage of the research, document analysis has been used as data collection tool. The data has been analysed by using descriptive statics. Some of the results obtained from the findings obtained as a result of the study are as follows: It has been found that the books in the field of social sciences, health sciences and natural sciences show inconsistency in terms of the total number of vocabulary. The frequency and prevalence of the vocabulary elements found in the academic Turkish textbooks and the vocabulary elements in the written expressions of the students are presented as tables. By comparing the vocabulary elements in the textbooks and in the written expressions of the students, the vocabulary used by the students but not included in the Academic Turkish coursebooks were determined and presented as numerical data.
