The Views of Turkists and Islamists on Women (The İnstance Of Ziya Gökalp and Said Halim Pasha)

The post-Tanzimat period, which is called the collapse period of the Ottoman Empire and in which social, political and economic changes were experienced, was also an era in which the women's movement and problems related to women were discussed. Thus, it is known that movements such as Islamism and Turkism, which emerged in order to raise the society and revive the national consciousness, also work on the women's problem and solutions, as well as the issues that concern the society. Particularly, the role of women in society and the family and the women's movement of the period are among the issues that are discussed intensively. For this reason, our research covers the problem of women in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. The approach of Turkism and Islamism to women, which are among the 19th century Ottoman intellectual movements, will be evaluated through the thoughts of Ziya Gökalp and Said Halim Pasha. Ziya Gökalp, one of the representatives of Turkism, put forward that women should take an active role in social life by showing the old Turkish societies as an example; Said Halim Pasha, one of the representatives of Islamism, and on the other hand, argue that the problem can be solved by following the path drawn by Islam.
