Changing process in planning institutions and its spatial effects in Turkey after 1980 a case study of teki̇rdağ

This thesis focuses on the spatial, institutional and planning approach change in cities and it takes Tekirdağ as the case study in terms of cause affect relationship. In this context, firstly the aim of the study and in what ways it will contribute to literature is explained. Following that related literature study and theoretical discussions developed by several authors such as Harvey, Lefebvre and Castells that consolidates the aim of the thesis are done. Among these discussions the institutional approach seemed the most appropriate theoretical framework for this study. The authors explain the production of urban space in terms of capital investments. In the third part our interest focuses on post 1980 period economic and spatial transformation and hence accumulation switches in Turkey. On that note what institutional and juristically changes took place, what the roles of planning institutions took, and lastly to what extent these institutions happened to be affective are tried be answered. As a result a Picture of planning institutions in terms of conflicts and role overlapping is aimed to be acquired. Lastly in the fourth section, Tekirdag case is discussed in detail as it went through a developing process depending on the decentralization of İstanbul industries which were to find new investment areas. Here at the economic, population spatial developments and changes were observed. To be able to understand these changes better, the current plans and legislations, their role in the spatial configuration process and what contributions new plans can add will be scrutinized.
