Anti-Americanism In Turkey (1960-1980)

The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the reasons of anti-Americanism that emerged between the years 1960-1980 and to examine its effects on this period. In order to understand the causes, evolution and results of Anti-Americanism, the significant events that marked the USA-Turkey relations between the years 1960-1980 are examined in detail. This thesis, in which the factors causing anti-Americanism are examined in two separate parts, externally and internally, gives information about the years 1960-1980 and goes down to the foundations of anti-Americanism that left its mark on this period. While addressing the subject, online documents from the United States Government Publishing Office, the US Government Accountability Office and the American National Archive, CIA reports, the Minutes of the US Congress and the Turkish Parliament, research works, articles, local and foreign newspapers were used. In the first years of the alliance, while the policies of the two countries were moving in the same line as they would fight together on the same front, by the 1960s, the period of perfect alliance in Turkish-American relations was over. Events such as the Johnson Letter, Komer Incident, Sixth Fleet visits, the poppy ban and the embargo overshadowed bilateral relations. With the period of Détente, bipolar system gradually softened. In the changing international system, ignoring its allies, the USA followed policies that only pursued its own interests. These policies led to the rapid development of anti-Americanism in Turkey on the rational basis.
