The reflection of the political climate during military coup periods in Turkey on music as a political communication tool

From past to present, coup periods have been a recurring theme in novels, poetry, songs, and films. Coups leave an indelible mark on a nation's history, embedding themselves in collective memory. For this reason, despite the passage of years, they continue to be the subject of extensive research. Coups have profound psycho-social, economic, political, artistic, and legal repercussions. This study aims to explore how music, as a crucial component of popular culture, has been influenced by the political climate of coup periods that deeply impacted societal psychology. The research focuses on three pivotal events in Turkey's history: the coups of May 27, 1960; March 12, 1971; and September 12, 1980. Through qualitative content analysis of politically significant songs that were popular during these periods, the study seeks to answer its research questions. The findings reveal that the political atmosphere and societal events of coup periods are reflected in the themes of political songs, highlighting the intricate relationship between music and the socio-political climate of the time.
