Evaluation of crew resource management training provided at airlines in Türki̇ye: A case study

Airlines, which have highly significant benefits for humanity in terms of air transportation, are situated at the core of the ecosystem of aviation. The attainment of these benefits is contingent upon the safe execution of flights. The non-technical skills of pilots constitute a crucial factor that substantially affects the safety of the transportation service offered by airlines. Therefore, the effectiveness of Crew Resource Management (CRM) Training, which aims to enhance the non-technical skills of pilots, transforms into a process that influences aviation safety. This study aims to evaluate Crew Resource Management (CRM) training in Turkish airlines with a focus on participant perspectives. Using a qualitative research approach, data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Eighteen participants from three airlines, including two pilot interviews, were involved. Participants included CRM trainers and pilots from various positions. Analysis revealed four main themes: Positive Opinions, Negative Opinions, Factors Affecting CRM Training Success, and Requirements for Effective CRM Training. Positive Opinions encompass favorable views towards the trainer, training, and participants, while Negative Opinions include sub-themes reflecting negative views towards the trainer, participants, and training methods. Factors influencing CRM Training Success include Managerial, Cultural, Trainer-related, Teaching Methods, and Implementation of Training. Effective Requirements for CRM Training are identified through sub-themes like Trainer-related, Process-related, and Senior Management Support-related requirements.The findings obtained within the context of the Turkish Air Transportation Sector suggest that the effectiveness of Crew Resource Management training, and consequently the enhancement of safety performance, is anticipated to be beneficial.
