Özet (EN)

Considering the history of the profession, the definitions regarding the professional competences of translators, who are indispensable actors of intercultural communication, have been made relatively late. However, with the development of international interaction and technology, both in the world and in Turkey, it is aimed to give translators a professional identity and sense of responsibility. Although the VQA (Vocational Qualifications Authority) has set standards for the translation profession in Turkey, it is a matter of debate whether translators operating in the market are able to fully meet these standards. There are also some deficiencies and inadequacies in the translation processes carried out in the translation market where professional standardisation is not sufficient. These deficiencies and inadequacies cause disorganisation in the translation market. As stated in Akerlof's "Lemon Market" theory, which is known as an economic theory, the lack of equal level of information between buyers and sellers about the product or service offered in irregular market conditions where asymmetric indicators are in question leads to quality products and services not finding their value in terms of value. With this study, the translation market in Turkey will be evaluated. The answer to the question "Who is a qualified translator?" will be sought through indicators related to the translation profession. The market conditions that pave the way for the problems related to the translation profession will be examined, and suggestions will be made to prevent the said market conditions from pushing qualified translators out of the market. As a result, with this study, solutions will be proposed to re-establish the market balance against the economic problems experienced by translators due to market disorder conditions and which resulted in their almost complete withdrawal from the sector. In addition, steps will be taken to clearly define the indicators of the translation profession in Turkey, to determine the people working in the sector by the members of the relevant professional group, and to subject them to an accreditation process that will be legally implemented.
