The role of non-formal education in the integration of refugees in Turkey

This study aims to evaluate the impact of participation in non-formal education institutions on the social integration processes of Syrian migrants in Turkey. The research was conducted among Syrian individuals aged 18-60 in Adana province, analyzing the differences between those who participated in non-formal education programs and those who did not. Elements of integration such as language acquisition, vocational skill development, social adaptation, and cultural awareness were examined. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and surveys, and the findings were analyzed using the SPSS program. Results showed that non-formal education programs strengthen migrants' Turkish language proficiency, vocational competencies, and social bonds. While language acquisition progressed more rapidly among younger individuals, the study emphasized the need to increase women's participation through supportive mechanisms such as childcare services. Furthermore, the study revealed that non-formal education programs contribute to migrants' perception of themselves as part of society. The research findings highlight the importance of non-formal education institutions in the integration process and point to the need for developing more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable programs. Overcoming language barriers, achieving economic independence, and fostering cultural interaction form the foundational pillars of integration. In this context, the role of non-formal education institutions such as Public Education Centers is evaluated as a critical factor in ensuring social cohesion and peace.
