The problems of refuge women and children in Turkey regarding international law

The phenomena of leaving the place that one lives due to the economic, political or military pressure, violence or oppression and of immigrating to another place in which one may find peace and tranquility are as old as the human history; and it is still an ongoing process. Especially, in the duration of the first half of the 20th century where two different World Wars took place,millions of people immigrated due to these and caused numerous legal and social problems to arose in the countries where they found asylum. On the other hand, states constantly searched for a solution and elaborated a set of international legal norms to these problems which were menacing their inner social balances. In our day, these legal norms that were once set aside via different instruments such as conventions, pacts and declarations continue to progress and evolve in the presence of newer situations, along with humanity's search for a permanent peace and justice. Despite that, humanity has not been still able to preclude wars and massacres in the 21st century. The wars / civil wars in the middle east, first in Iraq and then in Syria caused millions of people to escape to other places and humanity has once more come up against the weakness of its legal norms with regard the peace and justice. There are approximately 3 million people that have escaped from the civil war in Syria and have applied for asylum in Turkey, a neighboring country. Besides, more than 2 million of these people are women and children. In this study, the progress and development of refugee law with its historical background, international refugee law, legal regulations of Turkey with regard thereof is taken under review and elaborated with special emphasis on the social and legal problems of the refugees (women and children) that escaped from the civil war in Syria.
