Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study, which assumes that migration to be explained as equal to being a guest in today's modern world where being a guest means having a temporary stay in a place, is to understand the dynamics behind the way Syrian people, who immigrate to Turkey and have temporary protection status, are mentioned as guests in the news. Consisting of three main sections, this study firstly focused on the relationship of the concept of "guest" with the one of "immigrant" and "citizen". A conceptual discussion has been conducted on how the citizens and non-citizens are defined based on their internal-external contrariness from ancient times to the present day. In this way, while revealing the journey of the immigrant concept in history, the issue of when the immigrant is seen as a guest is clarified. Ultimately, the immigrant is the person who must be welcomed with hospitality once he/she steps into the borders of a country where he/she is not a citizen, but one who must either leave after a while or somehow be involved. In the next section, the emphasis is on the perception of citizenship shaped by the migrations in the Ottoman Empire since the beginning of the 19th century and the distinction of insider and outsider. Thus, the approaches to immigrants in Turkey during the period until the last wave of immigration were examined. The final focus in this study is to reveal that the immigrant, who was a guest at the time of the first encounter, became the target of which semantic contents when his/her hospitality extended. After mentioning some general information about the Syrians in Turkey and having introduced the research method, a critical discourse analysis was carried out focusing on the concept of guest in three different newspaper news. Key Words: migration, immigrant, Syrians, guest, hospitality, foreign, citizenship
