Examining the studies conducted between 2000-2020 on democracy education in Turkey

In this study, it is aimed to examine the studies on democracy education in Turkey between 2000-2020 years multidimensionally. In the research, since it was intended to obtain multidimensional and in-depth information, document analysis which is one of the qualitative research methods, has been preferred in accordance with the research purpose. Within the scope of document analysis, a literature review has been conducted in academic databases such as Council of Higher Education (YÖK) National Thesis Center, Google Scholar, Ulakbim, Dergipark. A total of 125 studies, including 51 master's theses, 11 doctoral theses and 63 articles which were obtained as a result of the literature review, have been used as data sources. The data analysis process has been carried out as a descriptive analysis of 125 studies identified as data sources. The studies examined within the scope of descriptive analysis have been analyzed under 9 themes which are the date, type, method, model, sample/study group characteristics, data collection tools, subject, result of the research. Findings obtained as a result of data analysis have been presented in a clear, understandable, transparent and systematic way by visualizing with tables and graphics under the theme headings. The findings obtained in the research have been discussed in the axis of domestic and foreign literature, and various results have been obtained based on the findings and suggestions have been presented. In the study, it has been concluded that the variables such as the educational status of the parents, the economic level of the family and the gender are effective on the democratic perception and democratic behavior, however they are not a sufficient variable on their own. In addition, in the process of acquiring democratic attitudes and behaviours, various results that show the factors such as family, school and society are effective on individuals have been obtained too. Based on the importance of democracy education, it is thought that the research can make positive contributions to the literature in order to understand the current meaning of democracy better and enable individuals to make democracy a way of behavior in their lives.
