Investigating the media usage habits of Turkish migrants living in Switzerland in the context of generation theory

Migration and media is a much studied topic in the communication literature. Many of the issues discussed in the literature are either the impact of the media on the perception of the local population on migration or the migrants' own use of media. Today, Europe has a large number of immigrants in the world and a large number of Turkish citizens have also migrated to Europe since the Second World War. Using generational theory, this study aims to answer some critical questions about the media use habits of first- and second-generation Turkish immigrants living in Switzerland with a generational approach. Understanding the media usage habits of immigrants has the potential to shed light on the many socio-economic and cultural contexts in which the Turkish diaspora living abroad today exists. This study consists of three parts: (1) media, media use and generational theory, (2) migration from Turkey to Europe under the global migration movement debates, (3) research on the media usage habits of Turkish migrants living in Switzerland. In the first part, the impact of globalization on media development and the debates on the development of new media after the twentieth century are detailed. The second chapter focuses on the debate on global migration flows after the twentieth century and discusses the strategic importance of foreign communities living abroad for both the home and host countries. The third part of this study presents the results of a field research conducted in the form of semi-structured in-depth interviews with fourteen participants. The interviews were conducted with first- and second-generation immigrants to Switzerland from Turkey.
