Economic situatian and problems of broiler sector in Turkey

In this study, reveals the current state and development of the poultry sector in Turkey, to identify problems faced by the sector and to offer solutions to these problems. Turkey's poultry sector has begun to show improvement in the 1970s, especially in the 1990s, the number of investments for modernization and production capacity have increased and has reached world standards. In general, the past 10 years, the number of chicken and quantity of chicken meat production has increased. In 2017, Turkey has reached record level with 2.1 million tons of chicken meat production and 1.2 billion chickens quantity. Chicken meat consumption per capita has increased %65, from 13.0 kg in 2005 to 21,4 kg in 2017. It has been observed that Turkey and other poultry consumption per capita has been quite low. When the production and marketing structure is examined; in Turkey in general, it is commonly seen integrated production structure in poultry meat production. In broiler farming, almost all of the producers operate under contract production model (subcontracting). When the subsidies for the sector are examined; interest-bearing investment and business loans, IPARD, It is seen that it consists of Rural Development Investments Support Program and export returns. The main challenge in the sector is dependence on import and high cost of poultry feed. High cost of breeding material production and research, high cost of breeding material production and research, animal diseases, finding new market for exporting, misinformation in poultry product sector, low consumption and among other problems.Since feed costs have the largest share in broiler production sector, the first problem to be addressed is feed cost. As a result of the decrease in feed costs in broiler production, the related costs during the production will be reduced. Consequently broiler meat consumption will increase and the broiler sector will gain more importance.
