The impact of conspicuous consumption on economic growth in Türkiye

The study included showy consumption, a style that exists from the past to present, but has recently managed to influence consumers through economic, social and especially technological developments. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of the recent flamboyant consumption on the growth of the Turkish economy. The study used the time series analysis method to detect economic repercussions in Türkiye. The selected time for analysis covers the first quarter of 2006 and the last quarter of 2020. The analysis used GDP data as a dependent variable. Independent variables included excise tax revenues, consumer price index and foreign direct investment data. For time series analysis, variables were applied to unit root tests, peer integration tests and error correction tests. The analysis found that the selected independent variables have a long-term and positive effect on Türkiye's economic growth. In accordance with the conclusion, the necessary policy recommendations have been made to make arrangements for the classification of luxury goods and services under the excies tax.
