Announcement and advertisement policies in Turkey (1950-1960)

After Democrat party came to power with the elections held on May 14, 1950, in the first several months of its government, has drawn the broadest frame of freedom for the Turkish pres with a liberalistic pres law, which has never been experienced before. However, the advancing time has brought one of the most troublesome eras in the history of the Turkish pres. One of the most important tools for the democrat party to control and keep the press under pressure has been official and private announcements and advertisements. Because, announcements and advertisements are the most important source of income and thus, source of life for the press previously and for the media later on. Therefore, the regulations and applications in a country regarding announcements and advertisements are vitally significant for the freedom of the pres. This study examines first the legislation of the subject matter era and then the legislation of the previous era in order to understand what the subject ? matter legislation means and then, the reflections of the policies and applications adopted in the period between 1950 and 1960, on the press of that era. As a result, the anti-democratic system applied by the Democratic Party against the press is reviewed in respect of the history of the Turkish press as well as the Turkish political life and the fact that not only the political government, but also the press itself of that era has been responsible for that era which has been quite problematic in the history of the Turkish press in terms of the freedom for the press and the reflection of the subject ? matter problems from the past onto our day are discussed.
