Teaching of literature in Turkey and United Kingdom (England)

Teaching of literature was evaluated on the basis of the curriculum, course books, approaches, methods and techniques, classroom application in this study, entitled ?Teaching Literature in Turkey and United Kingdom (England)?. This study aimed to determine the best suitable approach for teaching literature by comparing traditional and modern approaches.The universe of the study constituted high schools in Ankara (160 students and 4 teachers in grade 9, 10, 11, 12 in Bahçelievler High School, Alparslan High School, Çağrıbey Anadolu High School, Gazi Çiftliği High School), Liverpool (80 students and 2 teachers in KS4 in Holly Lodge Girls College and Notre Dame Catholic College).Students were seperated into two groups. One of them was instructed with the traditional approach while carried out with other was modern approaches. Approaches, theories, methods and techniques were observed and recorded for four weeks. Tests were used 3 times: pre test, post test retention test. Obtained data were analysed by SPSS 12. Records of camera and observation forms were evaluated via qualitative method.The aim, importance and limits of the study, hypothesises and research studies on this subject were given part in the introduction part.Theoretical knowledge and history of education in Turkey and United Kingdom were given in the literature review.The findings about education system and secondary education, curriculum, course books and materials, theory, approach, strategy, method and technique and classroom applications in Turkey and United Kingdom were evaluated in the fourth part. Lessons were evaluated with quantitative method, records of camera and observation forms were evaluated with qualitative method.Teaching of literature in both countries was evaluated in the conclusion part.Key words: Literature education, United Kingdom (England),Turkey, education, education system and secondary education, teaching of literature, curriculum, theory, approach, method and technique, course books and class practices.
