The new medium of culture jamming and digital activism in Turkey:Capses

Worldwide and in Turkey, by the user-oriented communication socializing -emerging under the wings of new technological paradigm, social media and its congenerics are used as an agora of society. Social media has been using ever – increasingly by users in individual, group and massive scales and has become a host of social movements and relevant digital activism practices. Social media which serves as a public space for network society, is the platform of new generation of internet users' actions for digital activism. Also with its dynamic, fluid and rhizomatic structure, it allows to produce peculiar acts of digital activism. Capses are the latest and most popular medium of socialized communication in Turkey. Capses are formed into different combinations of textual and visual elements and uses network society's common meaning frame and cultural codes. They are sharings which released into the cyber world to give a certain message, make an appeal or detection and expression of an advocacy. Capses are digital expression areas specific to Turkey and important part of them are about political agenda of the country. Common method that used in production of political capses is culture jamming. Jammed meanings or situations detache from their context and gain new meanings. The purpose of this paper is to analyse if capses –which are the the most current and remarkable phenomenon of the internet- are really a field of digital activism and anti – system opposition . For this purpose capses were chosen randomly among the most shared political ones and analyzed with semiotic analysis. As a result of the analysis it was seen that 'caps'es can be a strong criticism means and digital activism action. Keywords: Network society, social media, digital activism, culture jamming, capses.
