Turkish pasta industry sector analysis: Structure-process-performance

Abstract (EN)

Pasta is produced by Tr. Durum wheat and Turkey is setting to first place in the world in the production of this grain. However, Tr. Durum production is not sufficient and also the row-material of pasta prices are not reasonable for Turkish Pasta Industry. The mentioned facts are affacted negatively this industry and its competitiveness. The annual production capacity of Turkish Pasta Industry reached 920 000 tons in 2001. The domestic demand for pasta couldn't have arrived at desired level. Besides lack of domestic demand, Turkish Pasta Industry deals with some stoppages at international markets. This factors gave way to inactive capacity in the industry. In 1 997, the export quantity of the industry was 136 000 tons. It was the peak level for the industry. The main international markets of Turkish Pasta Industry were USA and Russia. In USA Market, anti-dumping application and new customs (deficiency taxation) taxes put into affect againist Turkish pasta. In Russia Market, the economic crisis in 1998 set a limit the export quantity of Turkish Pasta Industry. The events in main exportation markets of Turkish Pasta Industry showed that the drawback of limited markets exportation. The other negative factor is the 2.5 million ECU's quota set by EU in 1997. After these events, Turkish Pasta Industry comprehended that going towards new and assorted markets are must to increase the export quantity. Today, number of the firms in Turkish Pasta Industry is 27. The present production facilities of pasta companies equiped with modern high-temperature processing tecnology. The industry suffers from obtaining quality row-material (durum wheat) at not reasonable price. In this thesis, the current condition of Turkish Pasta Industry, exportation -importation of the sector considering the domestic and foreign events and problems faced with Turkish Pasta Industry were tried to explain.
