Trend analysis of temperature and precipitation on the Western Mediterranean coast of Turkey

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the temperature and precipitation trends in the Western Mediterranean Coasts of Turkey. In the study, monthly maximum, minimum and average temperature data of 9 stations were used seasonally. Likewise, monthly total precipitation data were analyzed as annual and seasonal periods. As a method, Kruskal-Wallis test was used to test the homogeneity of the data, and Mann-Kendall and Spearman tests were used for trend analysis. Linear regression analysis and Sen Slope estimator test were applied to the data to see the trend for many years. The findings obtained as a result of the analyzes are as follows: 1) There is an increasing trend in the maximum, minimum and average temperature data at all stations throughout the study area. 2) Especially in stations such as Alanya, Finike and Fethiye, which have been affected by the city, the tendency to increase in minimum temperatures is strong in the hot period. 3) Considering the weak trend of increase in minimum temperatures at rural stations such as Gazipaşa, Dalaman and Köyceğiz, the warming trend in the Western Mediterranean coasts is remarkable. 4) There is a general increase trend in annual total and winter precipitation, except for the decrease in Alanya, Antalya and Dalaman stations. 5) In the spring season, while the decreasing trend is evident in Antalya and the stations to the east, an increasing trend is noticeable at the stations to the west. 6) Despite the weak decrease in Anamur, Alanya and Dalaman stations in autumn precipitation, an increasing trend was detected in other stations. As a result; With this study, it is expected to raise awareness of the human effects of the change in precipitation patterns throughout the year, despite the increasing warming trend in the study area, which has a fragile ecosystem such as the Mediterranean climate. For example, considering that most of the precipitation in the region is recorded in winter, the decrease in winter precipitation in Alanya and Antalya, whose population increases every year, will put a pressure on water resources. In the field of study, which has an important place in Turkey in the field of agriculture and tourism, the change in climate has the potential to present negative effects.
