Türkiye's Asia anew initiative defense industry trade with Asean countries: Indonesia in the context of defense diplomacy

With the announcement of Türkiye's Asia Anew Initiative in August 2019 under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this thesis was written to analyze Turkey's defense industry cooperation within ASEAN, especially with Indonesia. In addition to the fact that the defense industries of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Turkey are regional powers and game changers in the global arena, the relationship between Türkiye-Indonesia-ASEAN in the context of defense diplomacy is analyzed with Joseph Nye's soft power theory. In this context, taking into account the turbulent past of ASEAN countries with each other and with Asia Pacific countries, as well as the presence of Europeans who carried out colonial activities in Southeast Asia for years, it is aimed to make better sense of the current existence of the ASEAN union, as well as to facilitate a constructive and integrative path in the field of defense diplomacy in the future relations of Türkiye-ASEAN-Indonesia. In terms of Türkiye's continued presence in the Southeast Asian region and alliance with countries in the region, its defense industry trade and cooperation with Indonesia demonstrates the importance of the concept of defense diplomacy. The aim of this study is to analyze Türkiye's and Indonesia's potential cooperation in the defense industry and military fields in the light of defense diplomacy and to reveal the defense implications of the two regions. This study offers a soft power perspective of defense diplomacy that will mutually benefit both sides. With the importance of their military and defense presence in their respective regions and in the global arena, Türkiye's presence in this geography with Asia Anew is analyzed through soft power theory. The research method used by the author is a qualitative one, which includes sources such as literature study, diplomacy forum, online media and face-to-face interviews with interested parties.
