Abstract (EN)

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine, for all teeth, the prevalence of C-shaped canal and its structure by taking the factors of age and gender into consideration in Turkish population through CBCT images. Materials and Methods: We have used CBCT images which were taken from 550 patients who admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at Inonu University. All permanent upper and lower jaw teeth which have completed their root development without periapical lesion, calcification or resorption have been included in the survey. No age and gender limitation has been planned. Teeth have been evaluated on sagittal, coronal and axial images, and have been assessed in five different points. Results: Among the assessed 458 patients, it has been observed that there is no significant difference in terms of age and gender in the prevalence of C-shaped canal configuration (n = 70). Among 11260 teeth examined, C-shaped canal configuration has been detected in the mandibular second molar teeth most (%56.1), maxillary second molar teeth (%17,8), in the mandibular and maxillary third molar teeth (%7.5), in the mandibular second premolar teeth (%3.7), in the mandibular first premolar teeth (%2.8), in the mandibular lateral incisor teeth (%2.8), and mandibular first molar teeth (% 1.9), respectively (n = 107) Conclusions: In teeth with C-shaped canal configuration, it can be seen that there is frequently one canal in the level of root canal orifice, more than one canal in the middle area of the root, and one canal in the apical area, and additional canal types can also be found. The root and canal structures of the teeth with C-shaped canal configuration can be determined successfully by using CBCT.
