Examination of the names given to schools in Turkey in terms of various variables

Abstract (EN)

This research, which aims to evaluate the names given to schools in Turkey, based on variables such as school level, school type, whether the school is a public or private school, the year of the school was named, and the geographical region to which the school is affiliated; is a case study. The scope of the research consists of total of 7181 schools located in seven provinces, which were determined by purposive sampling method to represent seven geographical regions of Turkey. The data of the research were collected through the examination of the MEBBIS database and the institutional web pages of the provincial directorates of national education and schools, and analyzed through content analysis. According to the findings in which obtained the research, the largest proportion of names given to schools in Turkey constitute naturel person names. Considering this, given the names are followed by the schools where the names of the geographical place, location and region at local and national scale are given proportionally. Although there are some differences according to variables such as school type, school level, date of naming the school, whether the school is a public school or a private school, according to other findings obtained in the research; different categories other than personal names and geographical place names have been less preferred nomenclatures for naming schools. Also; In public schools and private schools where personal names are given, philanthropic and founder names were preferred at a relatively high level.
