The teaching styles used by physical educaton teachers working at secondary and high schools and their value perceptions of these styles

The purpose of this study is to determine the predominantly used teaching styles and the teaching styles value perceptions of physical education teachers serving in state secondary and high schools in various regions, cities and districts. The variants used to get data were age, gender, graduate degree, university and department, academic standards of the schools they serve in, type of the settlement, region, seniority, professional title and degree of the teachers. Also the research aims to find out the effects of the teachers' value perceptions on the use of styles in their teachings. The research was carried out on a total of 1682 (523 female, 1159 male) volunteer physical education teachers serving in state secondary and high schools in various regions. It was determined that teacher-centred teaching styles were predominantly used valued by the teachers. On the results of the research it was concluded that there were significant differences among the preferred teaching styles based on age, gender graduate degree, university and department, the serving settlement, seniority, professional title and degree variations. On the other hand there were slight differences based on the academic standards of the schools they serve in and graduate university variations. Analyzing the teacher's value perceptions of the teaching styles it was concluded that there were significant differences based on age, graduate degree, serving region, seniority, professional title and degree variations. On the other hand there were slight differences based on gender, academic standards of the schools, graduate university, department and settlement variations. The quantitive results of the study has shown that physical education teachers serving in state secondary and high schools predominantly use and value learner-centred teaching styles. It is offered through this study that in-service training programmes should be designed to enhance the value perceptions of learner-centred teaching styles and constructivist teaching approaches.
