Drum-playing approaches in historical development of popular music in Turkey

Abstract (EN)

It has been seen that drum set came to exist by invention of base drum pedal in early 20th century. The research question that what kind of developments this instrument, which has been seen to be used in several music genres in our country since 1930s, experienced in Popular music in Turkey has created the rising point of this study. This study tries to analyse the factors that created playing approaces of drummers in popular music, the position of drum set in studio environment together with its historical development in the world and in our country by considering the ecoles influenced and country conditions. Within this framework, interviews with leading arrangers, musicians and drummers of the era have been made. The acquired data has been dictated and has been tried to be interpreted. It has been seen that during the period between 1960 and 2000 in our country, it has been influenced from the drummers of jazz and rock ecoles. The situation of the country until mid-1980s has restricted the development of drummers while, on the other hand, it formed the basis of their developping their own playing approaches. It has been noticed that there was no efficiency in recording environment for a long time. With the entering of electronic drum into the popular music, changes have been experienced both in drup/playing approaches and recording culture of drum kit. The most outstanding names in populer music are the drummers such as; Durul Gence, Vasfi Uçaroğlu, Salim Ağırbaş, Cezmi Başeğmez, Asım Ekren, Engin Yörükoğlu, Hüseyin Sultanoğlu, Okay Temiz, Cem Aksel, Turgut Alp Bekoğlu, Cengiz Baysal, Aydın Karabulut and Volkan Öktem. Together with the Turkish drum brans such as Şeref, Yıldırım and Cümbüş, German origined American drum brand Ludwig are the important drum brands used in our country.
