11 A CARYOLOGICAL RESEARCH ON THE TURKISH SIDERITIS L. (LAMIACEAE) SPECIES ( Ph. D. Thesis ) Esra MARTİN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY March 2003 ABSTRACT The genus Sideritis is represented by Hesiodia Benth. and Empedoclia (Rafin) Benth. sections in our country. There are 54 taxa as species and subspecies in these sections. 40 taxa belonging to genera Sideritis are endemic and the ratio of endemizm is % 74. The number and length of chromosomes of all taxa belonging to this genera were investigated by Image Analysis System. Chromosome numbers were determinated as 2n=30+0-2B in S. lanata, 2n=28+0-3B in S. romana subsp. romana, 2n=28+0-4B in S. curvidens, 2n=16+0-2B in S. montana subsp. montana and 2n=18+0-3B in S. montana subsp. remota that are belong to section Hesiodia. Chromosome lengths in this section are ranged between 0,37 and 1,33 um. Chromosome numbers of all taxa in the section Empedoclia is 2n=32 and chromosome lengths are between 0,22-1,96 um. 50 species belonging both of this sections have 0-9 B chromosomes but they were not determined in S. hololeuca, S. sipylea, S. armeniaca and S. libanotica subsp. microchlamys. In eleven taxa, mixoploidy was observed.
