Social exclusion in Turkey: Econometric approach

Since the past, people have first tried to meet their most basic physiological needs. After that, the individuals who meet their physiological needs need social relationships with their efforts to self-affirmation. Human is a basically social entity and wants to be in social relations. However, the deprivations of the individual prevent the individual from being in positive social relations and prevent the individual from integrating into the society by causing the individual to be excluded from society. The concept of social exclusion has emerged in France in the 1970s and has quickly been accepted as a concept in other European countries and spread rapidly. Especially with the increasing international migration, the increase in unemployment rates and the decline of the welfare state, the concept of social exclusion has begun to increase. The concept of social exclusion has been recognized as a problem in all developed and developing countries, and countries have also begun to include social exclusion within their social policies. In this context, the aim of this study is to create a social exclusion Index by taking into consideration the important elements that reveal social exclusion and the Income and Living Conditions (Panel) survey data carried out by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2006-2009 and 2010-2013 and to compare the factors that cause social exclusion with the Ordered Probit model. According to the findings obtained from the study, individuals living in poverty, individuals deprived of health, education and income, individuals without a profession, married individuals, individuals who are not officially married and individuals with unpaid family workers face social exclusion in certain periods of their lives due to their lack. In addition, the findings show that individuals have also brought other deprivations along with the deprivation they experience in any of the economic, social and social areas, and that the deprivation experienced in a given year is experienced in other years. In this case, the concept of social exclusion, which expresses a dynamic process, has an important place in the lives of the individuals and in case of inability to overcome it, it causes the individuals to be pushed out of the society by affecting every direction and prevents social integration.
