Türkiye as a transit country for international students from the Mano River Union countries

This study investigates the intentions and future plans of West African students in Türkiye, specifically exploring whether they perceive the country as a stepping-stone towards Europe, and the USA. The study investigates the factors that influence African students' decisions to pursue higher education in Türkiye, their career goals after graduation, and their opinions on exchange programs such as Erasmus+ and USA Work and Travel. Through in-depth interviews, the study reveals a complex interplay of factors influencing these students' decisions, including the quality of education, employment opportunities, and socio-political integration in Türkiye. The findings suggest that although several African students value the educational possibilities and scholarships offered in Türkiye, they frequently encounter significant challenges in adapting or integrating socially and politically into Turkish culture. Restricted career opportunities and perceived bias influence their contemplation of further migration from Türkiye to Western countries or return to their native countries. This trend highlights a significant disparity between the educational setting and the wider socio-economic context in Türkiye for foreign students. In theory, the study enhances our comprehension of international student mobility and the factors that impact their migration choices. It emphasizes the significance of analyzing both the educational and socio-political aspects in order to have a holistic understanding of the experiences of international students. Essentially, the results indicate that there is a requirement for improved support systems, such as more adaptable scholarship programs, strong career services, and activities focused on enhancing social and political integration. Policy recommendations encompass the enforcement of anti-segregation laws, streamlining administrative procedures for international students, and cultivating robust alumni networks to offer continuous assistance. By focusing on these specific areas, Türkiye can improve its ability to retain international talent and ensure that the educational investments made by these students result in long-term benefits for both individuals and the host country.
