Language difficulties of Turkish Ukrainian speaking students in Turkey

The relations between Turkey and Ukraine, which started during the Ottoman Empire, still continue in various fields. The concept of bilingualism emerges as a result of the intercultural interaction. Due to the fact that Turkish and Ukrainian belong to two different language families, the encountering of various linguistic problems in the learning process by Turkish-Ukrainian bilingual children is inevitable. Grammar is a communication tool and a skill that must exist for a full language adaptation and that cannot be ignored. During the literature review it was seen that the studies addressing these problems are insufficient. Considering the fact that the researches to be carried out in this field are supposed to play an important role in the preparation of language teaching programs, in the training of language experts who will contribute to the science of both countries, and thus in strengthening of the Ukraine-Turkey relations, it was decided that the issue of Turkish-Ukrainian bilingualism should be kept on the agenda and that it is worth investigating. In this study, the dominant language of bilingual children who were brought up in Ukrainian-Turkish bilingual families and who came to Turkey for education, and the phonetic, lexical, spelling and syntactic problems they encounter will be determined through a questionnaire. During the research, Alexandra L. Dunn's and Jean E. Fox Tree's "Quick and Gradient Bilingual Dominance Scale" and "Language Interference Assessment Scale" prepared by us will be used. The results to be obtained can be used on Turkish and Ukrainian language courses and will be a contribution to the studies on bilingualism.
