Turkey-Ukraine relations (1914-1923)

In this thesis, after mentioning the geographical, political and economic characteristics of Ukraine, Turkish-Ukrainian relations that started from the 15th century were mentioned, and then attention was drawn to the political, diplomatic, educational and cultural relations established between 1914-1923. Ukrainians, who have lived under the rule of different states for centuries, had occasional uprisings but without results. After coming under Russian domination in the 18th century, Ukraine, which lived in the shadow of this state, was defined as a part of Russia. The Ukrainians, who entered the war on the side of Russia in the First World War that started in 1914, will enter a completely different political life with the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. The Ukrainian Liberation Union, which was opened by the Ukrainians to become an independent state, also established a connection with the Ottoman Empire in 1914 and sought support from the Ottoman Empire in the struggle for independence. With the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on February 9, 1918, the first diplomatic relations between the Ottoman Empire and Ukraine were established. The friendship relations that started on this date were strengthened with the agreements signed on 12 February 1918 and 17 September 1921 for the return of military and civilian prisoners. The Treaty of Friendship and Brotherhood, signed with Ukraine in 1922 after the Battle of Sakarya during the National Struggle, both contributed to the victory of the Turkish War of Independence and played a major role in the commercial, educational and cultural cooperation that would be established later between the two countries.
