Determination of gender roles in elderly care services in Turkey: the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Hospice Directorate

The elderly population in the world increases, the questions on how and what care should been social policies towards the elderly is also growing. It is important not only to focus on elderly care but also what the impressive roles of care services and how this roles have an impact on the aging population in parellel with population growth. There are been emphasized three type of care models including institution, family and home with increase in the elderly population. Especially not only institutional care but also to focus on the enviranment in which elderly lives and the policies about this issue are developing rapidly. How the elderly is seen in society and the approach to aging, how and where the elderly care is provided by whom are evaluated in parallel with the elderly increase in the world. The factors affecting aging which are understanding of sexist care and the influence of learned gender roles are under debate with the situation of the elderly and the reflections under institutional care. Differences and increase cases between men and women in institutionalization rates are analyzed taking into account the extent to which their care is affected in this period when the elderly come up with their gender roles. The reflection of gender roles on care under institutional care is affecting both elderly qualitative and quantitative care taking. In this context proportional distributions over gender, the distribution of care within social norms and cultures, shaping and cause-effect connections of care is according to the rolles bring up an important question that needs to be addressed with increasing elderly population both in our country and in the world. The theoretical framework of research effectuates determinant of gender roles in elderly care services. Field research has been conducted to support this theoretical framework. This issue has been deepened and debated in the light of findings obtained from field research. Field research was targeted to conducted in the institution of the hospice connected to the metropolitan municipility Istanbul. Sampling was selected with random method and also semi-structured survey study was implemented. Key Words: Social policies towards to elderly, Institutional maintenance, Gender roles.
