Abstract (EN)
This study, which examines the news of people with disabilities in the printed media within the context of women with disabilities, aims to contribute to the limited literature in the field of media and disability. In this study, news that have been published by Yeni Şafak, Cumhuriyet and Hürriyet newspapers that represent different ideologies in Turkey, on December 3rd International Persons with Disabilities Day and one day before and after that day for 20 years had been analyzed by content analysis. Roles that are represented in the news where the people with disabilities are the subjects are examined according to the model of John Clogston. In 20 years, news about people with disabilities have been published in newspapers were 241 in total. People with disabilities within the scope of traditional model were represented only twice in the headline either as "super disabled" for being an extraordinary achiever or as the "medical" for being an extraordinary victim. People with disabilities could be included in only half of the news as subjects, and are represented equally between the progressive and traditional model in the newspaper Hürriyet and Yeni Şafak, while they had been represented in the progressive model in Cumhuriyet newspaper. Women with disabilities who have been exposed to intersectional discrimination due to being disabled and women could be included in only 14 news out of 241 as subjects, and their specific problems were not covered in any of the news. Although there has been an increase in the number of news about people with disabilities in 20 years, it cannot be said that news of the people with disabilities are sufficiently visible and people with disabilities as individuals demanding their own civil rights sufficiently represented in the news.
