Perception of asymmetrical threat in turkey in terms of security (in the context of Iraq and Syria since 1991 to the present)

Purpose of this study is to search terrorist attacks againts Turkey's security that borns in the geography of Iraq and Syria in the Post Cold War Era and to give an idea about how Turkey can take further military measures on security border issues. Although as a new concept, the term "asymmetric threat" was first used in 1975, as a content it has the same past with the history of warfare. Asymmetry was used more often after 9/11 attacks and it turned out to be new threat coming from Syrian and Iraqi territories. This study starts with the idea of "We can provide national security better and reduce asymmetric threats successfully if we can perceive the threats from a realistic perspective" as a continuation of the idea "We can prevent wars more, if we can understand and explain wars deeply." Related master theses and doctorate theses have been checked, books and articles in Turkish and English have been searched, and also written and visual press are benefited. At first, national security and asymmetric warfare is described including relations between, and then changing character of war in post Cold War era is studied, after that in a historical understanding, the impacts of asymmetric threats stemming from Iraq and Syrian territories are examined. Threats that don't come from Iraqi or Syrian territories are excluded from this study. This study contains Turkey's perceptions about asymmetric threats and measures since 1991 related to Syrian and Iraqi territories according to periods including the latest operations, and also gives ideas about solutions on how new threats can be faced.
