Music during the modernization period in Turkey

The purpose of this thesis titled ?Music During The Modernization Period in Turkey? is to review changes in music within the Turkish Modernization process which has penetrated into every sphere of life during development of Turkish democracy and influences of said changes. Changes in music are reviewed beginning from the Ottoman Era. Pre-republican Period and ?National Music? understanding which aimed a transformation in music for Post-republican period are handled in a comprehensive manner.Modernization in our Music comprises request of Westernization through an adaptation process, and the change in musical understandings of composers and listeners. Modernization in our music is not only an ideological demand, but also a result of getting in the habit of and getting pleasure out of listening "Western Music". Change in music within the Ottoman Era is not a part of transforming the society, but a part of modernization efforts of Ottoman aristocracy. On the other hand, official and national musical search, and policies of adapting the consequential understandings thereof are included by the efforts of transforming the society and are outside the province of natural modernization process. Contemporary music education is created by modernization in music and "national music" policies. "National Music" policies give birth to favorite technical results in terms of musicology, and hence they are successful to some extent.This thesis is composed of three sections. In the first section titled Conceptual Analysis; it is aimed to create a conceptual analysis framework on the basis of four concepts which will guide to understand notions of "Modernization in Music" and "National Music". In the second section, modernization efforts in Pre-republican era are discussed comprehensively. In the third and last section, ?National Music? policies in Republican Period and consequences of these policies are handled. Furthermore, reflections of "National Music" policies on music education are also dealt in this section.
