The main facts of image of Turkey the memberships to the European Unions

This master’s thesis comprises four parts, and analyses the basic problems and suggestions for solutions concerning the image of Turkey within the framework of its membership to the EU. In the first part, the history of the EU and Turkey are handled. In the second part, the concept of “image” is defined, and a variety of opinions and assessments from politicians both domestic and abroad and from NGOs are elaborated on. The third part deals with the elements that are thought to damage the image of Turkey in Europe. The fourt part presents possible suggestions to solve the above mentioned problems. Turkey does not possess a positive image in Europe. This hypothesis is verified on the basic of the analysis of the relations taking place between the EU and Turkey from the 1963 Ankara Aggrement to the present day. Within this context, the viewpoints of various circles in Turkey about the EU and those in Europe about Turkey are reflected in this study, thus trying to verify the hypothesis of this research.
