This study investigates the distribution, perception, and career implications of unpaid care work and mental load among white-collar employees in Turkey. Using data from a household survey conducted across 12 provinces and comprising 2,104 respondents, the analysis draws on a comprehensive inventory of physical and cognitive domestic tasks. Ordinary Least Squares regression models were applied. The results reveal gender disparities in both perceived and actual care and mental responsibilities, with the burden intensifying for women after marriage and parenthood. Men's perceived physical and mental burdens are notably lower than the actual responsibilities they undertake, indicating a limited level of awareness. The unequal distribution of care work and mental load is found to be an essential factor that influences women's professional lives by increasing the likelihood of refusing promotions. The results showed that marriage and parenthood significantly increased the likelihood of quitting their jobs due to housework responsibilities for women. Lastly, cognitive empathy is linked to higher awareness and more equitable task-sharing within the household.
