Abstract (EN)

VI SUMMARY PhD. Thesis THE EVALUATION OF FLY ASH AND POLYPROPYLENE IN VARIOUS PROPORTIONS IN THE PRODUCTION OF COMPOSITES Tülay YİLDİZ Fırat University Faculty of Technical Education Department Of Metallurgy 1998, Page; 105 In this study the heat transfer properties and usability as a new waste material produced out of two different waste materials was investigated. Fly ash and polypropilene as waste materials of thermal power stations which are produced over 10 milyon tons a year were used to manifacture a new admixture. In the these materials it was aimed to keep cuvironment and obtain economical benefits. On the outher hand this new insulator material would also provide energy save. The fly ash used in the experiments was obtained from Afşin - Elbistan and Soma thermal power plants. Polypropylene, which is used as binder, was melted and casted in dies with porous fly ash in differentVI 1 proportions, in order to obtain smooth surface specimens. The weight percenetages of fly-ash in the mixture were taken as 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70. Prepared specimens were applied compression, tension, water absorption, heat transfer and wear tests. The first chapter of this study is introductory to the subject. In the second chapter a literature research is given on the research works mode. In the third chapter information about the properties of flying ash from thermal -power plants are presented. The fourth chapter includes informations about the polypropylene material. In the fifth chapter the pyhsical model and mathematical formulation are laid before as the result of comparative investigations. In the sixth chapter, the experimental studies and results are discused. The research work resulted in that - Since the heat transfer coefficients of the specimens are low, it can provide a great cost save when used both external plaster and floor linings - In case of insulation gains importance the higher proportion of fly-ash and when the strength and water infiltration becomes important, the higher proportion of polypropylene must be at added to produce th new composite. - Due to its smooth surface, high wear resistance and high compresive strength in accordance with the binder content, this material could be used as floor lining - The specimens were applied on water absorption tests to achive a judgement on the freezing resistance of the new material. The results- showed that this material could be used as plate like plaster on the front of buildings and as roof insulator, for the results of the freezing tests were 30 % below of the prescibed values given in TSE norms.
