Özet (EN)
The perception of the other is a fundamentel factor determining the structure and the functioning of the international system. What shapes the perception of the other and the attitude towards the other is self awareness. Self awareness which positions itself in opposition towards the other and is in constant clash with it is constructed by a mental set(those elements shaping the functioning of the mind) which is based on not only the rational(positive- knowlege) but also the experiences(tradition)and belief. In constructing the other, self awareness structures its qualities to a great extent in relation to the other. The self-other conflict in international relations corresponds to the East-West conflict. While the West also expresses a civilization with the same, the East which constitutues its other does not correspond to its self knowlede. What is meant by the East is Islam since the formation of its self awareness. Since this study mainly focuses on the West?s perception of the other, according to the perspective of this study, self is the West and the other is Islam. While the functioning of the international sytem continues on the basis of the self-other, another has taken on a different course due to the depiction of another as the other, notwithstanding the fact that it remained the same, during the so called Cold war which witnessed the competition between the two superstructures of the West . Following the end of this competition, the system returned back to its normal course and the self- other conflict has reappeared, the self being the USA as the representative of the Western superstructure and the other being the Islam despite it possesed no representative capacity. The first part of the this thesis, whose general outiline is explained above, explains, within a framework, the conceptualization of ?self, another, and the other?. This is first followed by -the components of the Western superstructures which represents the self as it is viewed through Western perspective and than historical development of the self-other confrontation through the general outlines and breaking points. The second part first puts forward the approcah which argues that Cold War was a deviation from the self-other(another, another according to each other) and finally explains how the system returned back its normal course based on self-other in the aftermath of this deviation.
