Experimental investigation of pull-out resistance of geogrid placed on uniform sand soil

Geosynthetics have been preferred in many projects to increase the stability of geotechnical structures in recent years. Pull-out resistance and interface friction resistance of geogrids are very important design parameters for some geotechnical applications. In this study, the pull-out resistance of the geogrid material embedded in the sand soil was investigated experimentally by making a small modification of the simple shear test set-up. Thus, a series of experiments were carried out on sand soil with different relative densities and gradations. In the experiments, the geogrid placed between the uniform sand soil was exposed to pull-out. The used geogrid material has 0,85 mm thickness and 1,00 cm grid aperture. At the end of the experimental study, it was observed that the pull-out resistance behavior was similar to the classical load-displacement behavior of the soil. Classically when displacement increases pull-out resistance increases until a certain displacement but after a certain pull-out resistance when displacement increases pull-out resistance decreases. Generally, it has been observed that as the relative density value increases, the pull-out resistance increases. Due to the interlocking of soil grains with geogrid gaps, interface friction between soil and geogrid was also observed greater than internal friction of soil.
