Abstract (EN)
Backgrounds: Depression, which affects more than 300 million people worldwide, is among the leading diseases that cause disability. In our study, in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression; We examined the relationship between some disease-related variables and the irisin hormone, which has been shown to have positive effects on neuroplasticity in the literature. Methods: Forty patients with unipolar depression, 40 patients with bipolar depression, and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected from all participants. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) were applied to the patient groups. Serum irisin values of all groups were measured by the ELISA method. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the irisin levels of the unipolar depression under treatment, bipolar depression and control group in the study groups (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between the irisin levels of the bipolar depression and unipolar depression groups among the study groups (p <0.05). A negative correlation was found between the number of depressive episodes in the same period and serum irisin levels in both the unipolar depression group, the bipolar depression group and all depression patients (r=-.630, p<0.05). Conclusions: Lower serum irisin levels were found in patients with bipolar depression compared to patients with unipolar depression. The number of depressive episodes in the same period in bipolar depression patients is higher than in the unipolar depression group. In addition, it was observed that in both groups, those with high irisin levels among themselves had a lower attack rate. Based on these data, the height of the irisin hormone, with its positive effect on neuroplasticity, in unipolar depression, compared to bipolar depression and in disease groups; It is concluded that it may be affecting fewer attacks and thus benign course.
