Examination of occupational health and safety competence perceptions of university staff: The sample of Çankırı Karatekin University

In this study, which aims to examine the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) competence perceptions of Çankırı Karatekin University employees, the survey model was used. The research was conducted with 289 university employees. The research data were collected through "Personal Information Form" and "Occupational Health and Safety Competence Perception Scale". Computer-aided statistical package programs were used to analyze the data. Since the data were normally distributed, independent sample t test was used to compare variables consisting of two groups and ANOVA analysis was used to compare variables consisting of more than two groups. In cases where ANOVA analysis yielded statistically significant results, PostHoc analysis was performed. The OHS competence perception of university employees differed significantly according to their age, education level, occupation, length of service, knowing the content of OHS law, receiving OHS training, witnessing a work accident, and knowing OHS rights and responsibilities. On the other hand, the gender of the employees and their status of having a work accident did not create a significant difference on their OHS competence perceptions. The study concluded that the OHS perceptions of university employees are above average. In line with this result, suggestions were made to organize various trainings to increase the OHS awareness of employees and to repeat these trainings at certain intervals.
