The effect of cognitive distortions on stress coping styles in university students

Abstract (EN)

In this study, which examines the effects of cognitive distortions on the styles of coping with stress in university students, first of all, definitions are made within the framework of concepts. In this context, in the first part, cognitive theory is explained and cognitive distortions and thought errors are discussed. In the second part, the concept of stress is examined together with its symptoms, causes and sources. Afterwards, the ways of coping with stress and the factors affecting this situation are explained. Sociodemographic data form, coping with stress scale and cognitive distortions scale were used as research tools in the study in which relational screening and descriptive method were used. In the study, Mann-Whitney U test and correlation analyzes were made from non-parametric tests since the data were not normally distributed except for frequency tables. As a result of the research, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between the demographic characteristics of the participants, their levels of coping with stress and cognitive distortions. In addition, it was determined that there was a significant difference between cognitive distortions and the level of coping with stress and that they were in a positive relationship.
