Investigation of the mediating role of hope and self-respect in the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction among university students

Abstract (EN)
It is of great importance that people have a sufficient level of life satisfaction in order to develop an optimistic perception about the situations and problems they encounter throughout their lives, and to be satisfied with their lives and lead a peaceful life. Emotional intelligence, hope and self-respect are thought to be important predictors of life satisfaction. In this context, the main purpose of this research is to examine the mediating role of hope and self-respect in the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction in university students. In addition, examining the relationships between the variables of emotional intelligence, life satisfaction, hope and self-respect; In addition, examining whether these variables show a significant difference in terms of socio-demographic variables is among the other aims of the research. In this quantitative study, relational screening and causal comparison models were used. The research group of this study consists of 819 university students studying at a university in the Black Sea Region in the 2021-2022 academic year. "Personal Information Form", "Main Form Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale-33-Tr", "Life Satisfaction Scale", "Continuous Hope Scale" and "Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale" were used to collect research data. In the analysis of the obtained data, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson Product Moments Correlation Coefficient and path analysis were used. In the results of the research, emotional intelligence and self-recpect did not show a significant difference according to the socio-demographic variables of the research; life satisfaction shows a significant difference according to gender, mother's education level and family socio-economic level, but there is no significant difference according to class level and father's education level; In addition, it was found that hope did not differ significantly according to other socio-demographic variables except for gender. In the results, it was determined that emotional intelligence, life satisfaction, hope and self-respect variables had significant relationships among themselves. In addition, it was found that there were direct and indirect effects between the variables. Finally, it was concluded that hope and self-respect have a significant mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction. The research findings were discussed in the light of the literature.
