Correlation between drug addiction and suicide possibility among university students

Addiction is one of the most serious problems that threaten human life. Research suggest that a significant part of the drug addicted people suicide or attempt to suicide. Irrespective of the cause of drug abuse - whether because of an escape from life-personality, a way to relieve the pain or an attempt to go out of his/ her existence - drug addiction is an action that results in death. Therefore, considering that deaths from overdose may be thought to be a type of suicide, it is very important to study on the correlation between drug addiction and suicides. This thesis is intended to reveal the correlation between drug addiction and suicide possibility. Therefore, how the individuals taking part in the study are using the drugs and, the possibility for suicide are determined and, research is carried out on the correlation between drug use and suicide and, on the impact of mental problems on drug use and suicide. The research includes undergraduate and postgraduate students from a foundation university in Istanbul and, the Addiction Profile Index (API) developed by Öğel et al. and, Suicide Possibility Scale (SPS) finalized by Şahin and Batıgün. In the study it is founded that there is a significant relationship between addiction, suicide and mental condition possibility. The most commonly used substance was detected as alcohol, and then marijuana and they were followed by various drugs. The most common age group in substance abuse is the 18-20 age range. In the research it is concluded that, there is a significant correlation between the BAPI scale subscales and total dependence severity and scale of the dimensions of BAPI -K scores of the individuals considering self-punishment or suicide, individuals with suicide plans, and individuals who have attempted suicide.
