Abstract (EN)

Aim: The study was conducted to determine the effect of healthy lifestyle behaviors on smoking in university students. Materials and Methods: The research was carried out cross-sectionally. The universe of research consist of 8054 students studying at 5 faculties of Gümüşhane University (Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and Faculty of Theology). The sample of the study was determined as 832 students by power analysis. However, 921 people were reached during the data collection phase. The data were collected using the Personal Introduction Form, the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale-II (HLBS-II) and The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). In the evaluation of the data, mean, percentage distribution, independent groups t test, chi-square test and regression analysis were used. Results: The smoking prevalence of the students was found to be 28% (n = 258). It was determined that the students' mean HLBS-II score was 128.22 ± 24.89, and the FTND mean score was 2.64 ± 2.42. It was found that the mean HLBS-II and sub-dimension mean scores of the students who smoke were lower than the non-smoking students. It has been determined that the socio-demographic (age, faculty of education, place of stay and regular smoking) of smoking students have a 30.7% effect on Fagerstrom Nicotine Addiction. Conclusion: As a result of our study, it was found that students with high scores for healthy lifestyle behaviors smoke less and have lower smoking addiction levels. There was no effect of the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors scale and all its sub-dimensions of smoking students (n = 258) on the Fagerstrom Nicotine Addiction status.
