The relationship of gender, hegemonic male perception and religiousness in university students Van and Istanbul example

Abstract (EN)

Gender studies in general and masculinity studies in particular are a subject that needs to be filled in the psychology of religion literature, but on the other hand, it is a very deficient subject in terms of studies in the field. The aim of this study, which is based on a quantitative field research and includes a scale development study to measure the perception of hegemonic masculinity, is to reveal the relationships between university students' gender perceptions, hegemonic masculinity perceptions and their religiousness. The Gender Perception Scale (TSS), Hegemonic Male Perception Scale (HEAS) and Religious Attitude Scale (WTO) were administered to the sample group consisting of 943 volunteer university students aged between 18-50 (X=60,39) studying in Istanbul and Van. It was applied online in August-October 2020. Independent variables of the research (age, gender, marital status, faculty and city) and gender perception, the relationship between hegemonic male perception and religiosity was examined. T-test and ANOVA analyzes to determine the relationship between dependent variables and independent variables, correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between dependent variables. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the general religiosity, gender perception scores and hegemonic male perceptions of the sample group were high. According to the results of the correlation analysis, it was determined that there is a strong negative significant relationship between the gender perceptions of university students and their hegemonic masculinity perceptions. A moderately strong and statistically negative correlation was found between gender and religiosity. It was observed that there was a moderately strong and positive significant correlation between hegemonic male perception and religiosity.
