Examining the relationship between depression levels, work rumination and psychological resilience in university students

This study aims to examine the relationships among depression levels, occupational rumination, and psychological resilience in university students. The effect of the variables of occupational rumination and psychological resilience on depression has been investigated in this research. To analyze the relationships between the depression levels of university students and their levels of occupational rumination along with the subdimensions of occupational rumination and psychological resilience, a Personal Information Form was utilized to gather information about the demographic characteristics of the university students, the Short Beck Depression Inventory was administered to measure depression levels, the Occupational Rumination Scale was employed to assess occupational rumination levels, and the Psychological Resilience Scale was applied to determine the levels of psychological resilience. In the context of this research, data has been collected in an online environment. The sample of the study consists of university students aged 18 and older who are studying at various universities in the 2024-2025 academic year. The sample includes a total of 334 university students, comprising 204 females and 130 males. A simple random sampling method has been utilized in the research. The data obtained within the scope of the study have been analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 21.00. To examine the relationships among variables, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, Partial Correlation, Simple Linear Regression, and Multiple Regression methods have been employed. A T-test has been applied to determine whether the variables of depression, work-related rumination, and psychological resilience differ according to gender, age, and class. When the number of groups exceeds two, One-Way Analysis of Variance (Anova) is applied. In order to determine the source of the significant differences obtained from the Anova analysis, an LSD Test has been conducted. In addition to these analyses, mean, standard deviation, and percentile values have been calculated to describe the variables. According to the results of the analysis conducted within the scope of the research, it has been concluded that there are significant relationships between depression in university students, work-related rumination and its sub-dimensions, and levels of psychological resilience. Consequently, it has been found that depression is positively and weakly associated with work-related rumination. Additionally, it has been determined that depression is positively and weakly associated with the emotional sub-dimension of work-related rumination. In addition, it has been found that there is no relationship between depression and the problem-solving sub-dimension of work-related rumination, as well as between depression and the detachment sub-dimension of work-related rumination. Furthermore, it has been concluded that there is no relationship between depression and psychological resilience. It has been determined that work-related rumination is positively and moderately associated with psychological resilience. Additionally, it has been determined that psychological resilience is positively and significantly related to the emotional sub-dimension of occupational rumination. Furthermore, it has been concluded that psychological resilience is positively and significantly related to the problem-solving sub-dimension of occupational rumination, and that occupational rumination is positively and moderately related to the detachment sub-dimension.
