ABSTRACT THE RESEARCH OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS? OPINIONS ABOUT MARRIAGE AND PARTNER SELECTION Ondas, Barıs The Department of Family Economy and Education of Nourishment Thesis Counselors: Yard. Doç. Dr. Nedime SANLI, Yard. Doç. Dr. brahim KISAÇ November -2006 This research is a descriptive study which investigates the ideas of university students? ideas about marriage and their choice of the partner. The research has been applied on 523 people (47.2 % girls, 52.8 %boys) who are determined by random sample technique. Those people are the students in the first grade (263 students) of various universities that have the selected four year degree faculties on the borders of Ankara. The improved questionnaire form has been applied as a vehicle for collecting data. The statistical program of SPSS 13.0 has been benefited for the evaluation of the data, the percentage and frequency distribution of data has been taken, Chi-Square test and t Test have been applied. The findings of the research are; It is stated that the ages between 26?29 are the most appropriate for the marriage for more than half of the participants while nearly the half of them agrees on the ages of 22?25. The students have given the answers of ?by themselves (49.7 %) and ?together with agreement (47.4 %) to the question of ?who must decide to whom you marry?? After analyzing the demands of students to the opinions about marriage ?it must be made for sharing life with a loving person; the happiness of the marriage continuous with the adherence of partners; marriage must be made for a healthy identity of children and in healthy marriages as years pass by the partners are integrated?. It is certain that the students of a high percentage agree with these ideas. The majority of the students endorse the opinions of ?it endures the continuance of generation, it allows an easy sexuality, and it provides a more v coordinated life.? on the other hand they do not agree the ideas like marriage reduces the respect and love and it separates from mother and father. It is established that high rate of students agree on the idea ?there must be a flirtation period before marriage.? But they do not share the idea that ?there must be sexual affair before marriage.? The highly significant factors in marriage are ?determined as? ?achieving economic freedom, reaching physical maturity, completing the education, attaining social maturity.? Furthermore, the participants emphasized that their partner must have his/her own income, a good job, and she/he mustn?t be married before and must be a virgin. It is determined that in marriage wife?s being more educated and being elder are undesirable features for most of the participants. The student participants stated that one of the partner?s being same sex, indifferent, frustrated and peevish are highly rate obstacles for the marriage. In addition, they declared that they declared that they do not marry someone who fears of responsibilities of marriage and who is a close relative. In this research, it is determined that unfaithfulness is the most common family affair-the participants faced in their country and society. Moreover, the majority of the participants emphasized that bad habits and lack of income are the other family problems in their country and society.
