Knowledge, attitude and behavior of university students about food safety

Food safety, food production, processing, storage, transportation and distribution of the necessary rules in compliance with the necessary steps, taking measures, health and food to be protected as health status to be defined as to reach. Inadequate food safety practices are caused by foodborne diseases. To understand the seriousness of this situation, the level of awareness of consumers and producers should be increased. The aim of this study is to examine the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of students studying in the fields of health, science and social sciences related to state and foundation universities and to determine the differences between them. As the universe of the research, Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Engineering and Istanbul Ayvansaray University Fine Arts, Design Architecture and Faculty were determined. A total of 400 people were included in the study. According to the research findings, 41.6% of the students were male and 58.4% were female. 52.1% of the students are mean the ages of 20,2. There was no significant difference was found in the chi-square test performed between the information scale and gender A significant difference was found in the chi-square test performed between the information scale and the faculty variable (p <0.05). The level of food safety knowledge of the students studying in the fields of health and sciences is higher than that of the students studying in the fields of science and social sciences. There was no significant difference between gender and attitude in terms of attitudes and behaviors (p> 0.05). However, the average score of the attitude scale of the students of the Engineering Faculty is higher than the others. It was determined that the average score of the behavior scale of the students of the Faculty of Fine Arts was higher than the others As a result, it is proposed to increase the awareness of university students about food safety, attitudes and behaviors, food safety and hygiene lesson of all faculties in universities.
